Tag: Scripture and captivity
Scripture and Captivity describes the relationship between biblical interpretation and the recognition, naming, or perpetuation of captivity.
Within the Captivity Lens, Scripture can help expose domination, affirm created personhood, clarify the limits of human authority, preserve conscience, and make freedom more visible. It can also be misused when isolated passages, theological claims, or interpretive authority are used to demand compliance, silence protest, override self-report, spiritualize suffering, punish differentiation, or make continued access to coercive relationships appear morally required.
The issue is not Scripture itself, but what human beings do with it. Captivity-informed interpretation therefore asks whether Scripture is being used in ways that preserve agency, conscience, truth, and direct relationship with Real Jesus—or whether biblical language is being recruited to strengthen a coercive architecture.
